If somebody's paid you by check and before depositing that check you make a photocopy of it, and then ultimately you deposit the original check and you receive the money for it, and then you decide that you want to try to deposit that second check that was photocopied, if you attempt to do something like that, you will be arrested for a theft charge, you'll be arrested for a forgery charge, and you will also be arrested for an uttering charge, which is actually for trying to present that knowing it was not a valid check.
